Q. Why?
Why are you willing to give me a complimentary coaching call RJon?
A. By following the steps that lead you to this “private” page on my website, you’ve actually distinguished yourself as being far more serious about your own success than thousands of other lawyers who demonstrate by their in-action that they’re not really very serious about their own success. No-one is an island and I certainly didn’t get to where I’m at in my career and business without a lot of help from a lot of great people. So you can say this is my way of giving back. You can say it’s because I LIKE speaking with lawyers who are serious about being successful. You could also say it’s because I know from experience that the more lawyers I help who are serious about their own success the fuller my pipeline stays and the more options I have in my life and business. All three are equally-true statements.
Q. What?
What exactly is going to happen during this complimentary coaching call or is this really just going to be a sales pitch to join one of your coaching programs?
A. This is a perfectly-valid question and fear of asking it is probably one of most common reasons why other lawyers stay-stuck even though there are plenty of great resources available to help them. OK, so what we’re going to do is invest about an hour on the phone together and depending where you’re currently at in your business (starting, need some help or already running a successful law firm) I may ask about some of your key business processes. Based on what I hear I’ll be able to get a mental picture of how your business operates. Then we’re going to discuss where you want your business to be in terms of financial, personal and professional performance. Because a law firm that isn’t serving your needs on all 3 axis is doomed to either self-destruct or it must destroy you, eventually. Of course neither of us wants that to happen so based on what you share with me we’ll identify a few areas where you can make easy improvements – there are always a few areas where we can make easy improvements in a small law firm to make you an even happier lawyer. Obviously, if during our discussion it appears you may be a good candidate for one of our coaching programs I’ll certainly let you know. But that’s the beauty of having efficient and effective marketing systems in-place: I get to enjoy being selective about who I choose to work with and we don’t ever have to feel uncomfortable about pitching our programs. In other words, if it’s a good fit we should both know it and the next steps will be obvious to both of us, after an hour of working together.
Q. Who?
RJon, you said you get to enjoy being selective about who you admit into your coaching programs. Who is the right type of lawyer that you look for?
A. Above all else, I look for lawyers who believe in themselves and their ability to affect their surroundings rather than being affected by those surroundings like a house plant. Starting, marketing & managing a highly-successful solo/small law firm isn’t all about technical knowledge. Sure you must have certain technical knowledge they didn’t teach any of us back in law school but technical knowledge by itself doesn’t cause a successful law firm to happen. Growing a law firm to gross $500,000, $1million and more as a solo isn’t all about marketing skills either. Marketing skills certainly make the task much easier and more enjoyable but being a natural rainmaker in and of itself doesn’t portend a successful law firm without there being more in the mix. What I look for is a lawyer who has a strong belief in him or herself. A lawyer who “gets it” that happy lawyers make more money; that technical management knowledge and marketing skills & systems (learned or natural) when properly-harnessed tend to make us happy lawyers; and that being a happy lawyer is what ultimately attracts great clients and profits to the firm. Most important I look for lawyers who agree with me that being a happy lawyer is a worthwhile objective in & of itself.
Q. When?
When will we speak?
A. It may not happen right away. Between my private in-person meetings with lawyers in our “Play A Bigger Game” coaching program, our quarterly live mastermind retreats for everyone in our “Solo & Small Law Firm Owners’ Freedom Academy”, my monthly group coaching calls, personally overseeing development of new resources for all our Members, walking groups of lawyers through their first formative months when first starting a law firm to be sure they have a solid foundation and a national speaking tour I’m currently engaged in for Microsoft my time is admittedly limited. However I sincerely love what I do! And few things are as enjoyable for me as meeting a new lawyer whose actions to-date are a strong indicator he or she may be the type of lawyer I like to have in our programs. So I’m happy to help you out and perhaps discover together if now is the time for you to come grow with us in one of our coaching programs. Either way I promise it will be a profitable investment of your time to go through this process with me.
Q. Where?
Where are you located, RJon?
A. I live and work from my home in Coconut Grove, which to my taste is the most beautiful neighborhood of Miami, Florida. Outside my window I see peacocks, giant iguanas, and our cats and Mini-Dog all playing in the yard. Between 1999-2001 when I worked as a Law Practice Management Advisor with The Florida Bar’s Law Office Management Assistance Service (LOMAS) under its legendary Founding Director J.R. Phelps I devoured Michael Gerber’s “E-Myth Revisited” and helped to apply its principles in hundreds of solo & small law firms. Which is all to say that my business is highly systematized and we’re well on our way to making me redundant in most of the day-to-day operations. So depending when we speak I may be in my office, or in any one of more than a dozen cities where I’m currently scheduled to conduct a workshop. Click HERE to see if I’ll be in a city near you and please consider making plans to attend the workshop so we can meet in person.
Q. How?
How exactly is this complimentary coaching call going to work?
A. I’m going to call you at the agreed time on the agreed date. After we say our hello’s, I’ll confirm that the time still works for you. I’ll assure you everything we’ll discuss will be kept confidential. I’ll propose an agenda to make the most productive use of our time. And once we agree on the agenda, we’ll get started. There’s nothing special you’ll have to do to prepare for the call. Just be in a quiet place where you can have a productive conversation, take some notes and be prepared to make decisions based on what we discover together.
